Fairy Animation practise

I tried animating fairy's wings today.
In the film fairy won't move much apart from her wings, her body stay sitting down.

I am going to make a slight change on her wings, instead of Swallowtail Butterfly I will change the design based on Panchala Ganesa (Tailless Bushblue), which is a blue butterfly with simple wing shape.

The reason for this is to simplify the animating time, also the colour blue would stand out really well with the red mushroom.

Project Cancellation

After a private presentation with the tutors we have concluded that the story was too intricate and long to use as a short final piece and we got advised to scrap the ideas and start all over again.

The storyboard did not make sense since there was too much information to explain the story. We could not simplify without changing the entire story and it was something that we were not hoping for. Also I feel that the lack of communication between the group was another issue. I was confused with the storyboard and felt that we could not go any further without changing the project completely which has lead us to the emotional issues which was definitely interrupting the progress of our project. We had many discussion in the class but minimal communication outside the classroom had possibly caused the main emotional issues.

After the long debate with the group we have concluded that we could no longer work as a team to produce a film. Instead we have decided to be independent and work on our own project as we felt that this would be the best choice for all of us. I feel nervous about working on my own, but definitely feel better than where I was. We will still be supporting and helping each other and work our way towards to the final show.

I will be thinking of my own ideas from now. This is going to be the new start of my final year of the course. I will need to work harder than I have ever had to catch up with the rest of the people in my course and make sure that my work will be able to stand beside them in the final show.

Storyboard - Initial

 Initial idea of the storyboard.

Character design - Dog

Thankfully the changes has made before the character design so here is the dog design. He has antenna that would glow in the dark. Rest of the design are pretty much a 'dog'.

Issues

We were aiming to create a film which is about 2 minutes long, but after the tutorial we have realised that the story was way too long to fit into 2 minutes. So we have decided to simplify the storyline. Also we have realised a few problems with the storyline.

Problem 1 - Too much Montage. I thought we don't need 2 montage, possibly simplify it with just 1 montage.

Problem 2 - Story is too long. As I have mentioned above, the story is way too long to fit everything into 2 minutes. Too much things are going on and needs to be simplify.

Problem 3 - Why is there are a dog like you get them on a Earth if the planet has humanoid animals? Maybe change the dog design into other non-realistic living thing?

Problem 4 - The story needs to be developed far more than the current stage, the story does not make sense since too many things are going on at the same time to tell this one single story. So again, Simplify.

We will need to look into the storyline again from beginning and see if we can change the story and make it simple as possible.

Initial Story

The initial story is about a Lizard-man who is travelling to meet his child, shown by him looking at a photo of a young humanoid lizard while holding a map. While stopping off in a town for supplies he notices a stray dog. Feeling slightly sorry for it he gives it a bit of food and moves on. While walking away he hesitates and turns around to find the dog is following him. The Lizard-man attempts to walk away from the dog a few times without success.
A montage follows of the dog following behind the Lizard-man across various locations.
After a few clips of the Lizard-man being unable to shake off the dog he runs as fast as he can away from it. When he turns around and sees the dog is no longer there he turns back feeling happy but then trips on something and his bag flies down a crevice where it cannot be reached. Angry the Lizard-man looks to see what he tripped over and sees the dog under his foot. Extremely angry now the Lizard-man roars at the dog very loudly and showing his teeth causing the dog to run away scared. Angry about he dog and upset about his bag the Lizard-man storms off continuing his journey.
Another montage of the Lizard-man travelling alone.
During a night time the Lizard-man hears a strange noise and sees the dog in the dark bringing him his bag. Happy to have his things back the Lizard-man becomes friends with the dog and they travel together to the place where they will meet the Lizard-man's child.
Once the pair arrive at the place they find a grave with the child's name on it. The Lizard-man is sad about finding out his child had died and the dog tries to comfort him. They sit together in front of the grave.

The End.

Initial Character Ideas and research

We have came up with an initial storyboard, based on a Lizard man and a dog who is travelling to find his/her son/daughter. A lizard man is going to be a humanoid animal (Where animals lives their life just like human).

For the initial research I have looked into the films:

 "Brave Story" (2006) (By Gonzo)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-gbKlpvtsM (03.20~ humanoid Lizard)

During this film there is a lizard man who lives his life just like a human traveller/trader. He talks human language and walks on 2 legs.

"The Cat returns" (2002) (By Studio Ghibli)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq7NQ0qs7N0 (0.15~ Cat stands on 2 legs and talks)

The Cat returns involves a humanoid cat living in the human world who lives in a house like a human. Also there is a cat kingdom populated entirely by cats who walk on two legs and speak human language.

"Rango" (2011) (By Nickelodeon Movies)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-OOfW6wWyQ

The film Rango follows a house pet lizard who walks on two legs and talks human language. He find a village in the desert full of other animals who walk on two legs and talk human language and also wear clothes.

Beginning of the final year

My final year of course has finally started, so I will be posting my project progress on this Blog.

This term is based on pre-production of the final project, which I will be making a 2D film in a group of 3 with Jennifer and Chloe. We will be focusing on developing our drawing skills and plan out the storyboard, Character designs, Concept arts, layouts and Animatics.
We have a huge amount of tasks to cover during this term, so we will definitely need to concentrate on this project more than we have ever done over the past years.
